How I am where I am right now

The Beginning of the End

Lets go back to the start. Although, looking back, it seems like the end. I caught her glacing my way from across the room. I admit I caught myself being lost in her smile and her laughter. Hey eyes were the best part, the way they sparkled under the sunlight made her seem like she was ruthless. We would look back and forth at each other and the way she gazed in my direction made me feel like I was floating. It was all wrenched away from me though because it was time for us to depart and now I felt like I would never see her again. I remember sitting on the car ride home and thinking to myself, was she a detective? It seemed possible from the way she was watching my every move. Will I get caught now for what I have done? No way. The plan was perfect and locked down in place. There was no way that the information could have been leaked from room 143. The room was impenetrable and I double checked the security features myself. My mind was making me overthink and started playing games with me which is odd because I was starting to panic, which usually never happens. I couldn't sit still in the car, it felt as if it was electrified since I was shaking violently. I thought to myself how couldI have let this girl in so easily like that? How stupid of me, I should have been more alert and careful. I had no choice. I have to run away before she finds out about my scandal. I shall go to Mexico and start a new life. It will be perfect and I will be able to leave all the bitterness behind me. This is exactly what I need. A place where noone knows who I am. Clearly, you'd feel the same, had you been there at the beginning of the end.

PARTY PARTY PARTY

If I were to throw a party, it would have to be a lunch party because breakfast is too early to do anything and dinner is when you just want to sit around and relax. By throwing a lunch party you have plenty of time after to do what you want with your party. The first person I would invite would be Russell Peters to entertain everyone with his humor. We would definitely need chef Ramsay to cook amazing food so that our stomachs will be full with satisfaction. We would need Queen Latifah as our taxi driver to drive us around in her amazing race-car-like taxi. Finally, I would invite Mrs. Hyde to my lunch party so that way I have an opportunity to sweet talk her into giving me great marks.

5 Levels of Reading

1) Literal- Titanic- was a great movie that explained what happened when the unsinkable was actaully sunk by an ice berg and many died.

2) Emotional- Million Dollar Baby- was one of the saddest movies I ever saw where a boxer who you wanted to win was cheap shotted and became paralyzed during one of her biggest fights. She wanted to die and move on while her accomplishments were still fresh in her mind instead of rotting away in a hospital bed.

3) Moral-The best lessons I ever learned was "We Share Everything" by Robert Munsch which taught me to always share and care. We receive happiness when we are able to bring happiness into another persons life.

4)Symbolic-A symbolic book about dreams that I read was "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami. The dreams symbolized an escape from the complications of life. It teaches that we need something stable in our life because life may never go the way you wanted, or planned or take an unexpected turn.

5)Hyperbolic-The Life of Pi was a great example of this book which was about a boy stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean with a tiger and has to survivie for many days. The boy "imagines" all these different animals coming along and helping him but in the end he gives us the "real" story but we're never really told which one is the true version.

The Days we Knew

It was just another typical day at Orchard Park Secondary School on a chilly Thursday. Minwoo was sitting in geography class eagerly waiting for the bell to ring at 11:12 so he could go to Torino’s to hang out with his friends and grab some food. As the bell rang, he met up with his friends in the hallway and they all headed to Torino’s together. Once they arrived they swarmed the foosball table and had fun and jeered each other as plays were made and goals were scored. As they were playing, Minwoo noticed two unfamiliar faces walk into the store, look over and then say, “Look at those faggots playing foosball.” Minwoo and all of his friends ignored the comment seeing as how only half of them heard it. Minwoo continued on playing and after he lost the game he went over to the counter to buy a drink where those two unfamiliar faces were still standing waiting for food. All of a sudden one of the strangers, named Mike, shoves Minwoo and says to him in a demeaning manner, “Don’t touch me” to which Minwoo replies “I didn’t though”. Mike stands straight up towering over Minwoo now and says, “Yeah you did kid” so Minwoo faces him as well and says, “okay, my bad, wanna relax now bud?” Minwoo and Mike are now face to face with only an inch of space separating the two of them and are about to start throwing fists into the air. Right when Minwoo was about to strike, Minwoo’s friend, Valdrin, steps in and says, “Guys, relax! We can settle this a different way” and both Mike and Minwoo look at Valdrin and ask, “How?” Valdrin snaps his fingers and magically a ping pong table started to rise from the ground where the foosball table had been and then two paddles and a ping pong ball appeared out of thin air. Everyone inside of Torino’s stared in awe and wonder and then Valdrin explains, “You two shall play a ping pong game up to seven and the loser never returns to Torino’s ever again.” Minwoo and Mike looked at each other and agreed to play.
Minwoo was nervous since it has now been 7 years since he last held a paddle on that horrible day. Minwoo was the national ping pong champion and was returning to defend his title. His coach, who was addicted to gambling and had bet a million dollar’s that Minwoo would win. Sadly, Minwoo was defeated and his coach had no money to pay back the shady men he always dealt with. One day, three big men came into their practice room and took his coach away. He never saw his coach again. He swore to never hold a paddle ever again. This memory had become omnipresent on Minwoo’s mind and sweat started trickle down his forehead. All of his friends were counting on him to win so that they could come back and always hang out there. He slowly reached for the paddle as the image of his coach being dragged away flooded his mind.
He grabbed the paddle and all of his friends started cheering for him but the paddle felt like a stranger in his hand. He was no longer familiar with the feeling of the smooth wooden handle and thus he became more nervous. His knees were weak, and arms were heavy, there was vomit on his sweater already. He was preparing to serve but the sweat on his hands made it much more difficult to hit the ball. He threw the ball into the air to hit it but the ball went wide off the table. He continued to play horribly but somehow managed to gain points from the faults of Mike. The score was 6-4 and it looked hopeless for Minwoo and his friends. It was Mike's serve now, he threw the ball into the air and hit it towards Minwoo, the ball was traveling fast but skimmed the top of the net which called for a reserve. All of a sudden Minwoo slipped on the wet floors (the floors were wet when Minwoo dropped his Nestea pop-can to fight Mike) and lost consciousness. While he was knocked out he saw images of his coach cheering for him and his coach told him that everything was alright and that it would all be over soon. Minwoo woke up to his friends yelling for him and picked up his paddle which felt familiar once again. He told Mike to serve even though his friends were worried. Mike served the ball with a ridiculous spin but Minwoo hit it back right at Mikes head no problem. He returned Mike's serves like they were nothing. On the last point, it was tied 6-6, and Mike hit the ball with incredible speed and it looked like all hope was lost but Minwoo's hand just reacted naturally without his mind controlling it and hit it back right at Mikes forehead. The impact of the ball knocked Mike out and gave Minwoo the game winning point at the same time.
Minwoo and his friends left Mike there on the ground and went out to celebrate. Later back at school he was called down to the office was told that he may be charged and was being suspended. He went home scared to face his parents but when he arrived home his coach answered the door. Minwoos face lit up and he knew that everything was going to truly be okay afterall.

You Would Never Have Guessed What...

You would never have guessed what happened, I was walking down the street, minding my own business when all of a sudden these three guys came and tried to kidnap me with bubblegum bubbles. They would all blow bubbles and tried to entrap me in them. Then all of a sudden the clock on one of the attackers necklace started to suck me in. The clocks face disappeared and showed a reflection of me but I was older which was very unusual. I could tell it was me because of my clothes and the gum stuck in my hair but I was 50 years older. It startled me at first but I adjusted to the image of it. Then the second and third guys forgot to keep blowing bubbles to entrap me. I would pop the bubbles and then ran away and then the 3 men chased after me while their shrieked in a foreign language that I was unfamiliar with. All of a sudden a beautiful girl pops out from nowhere and distracts the 3 pursuers from me. The beautiful girl reached into her pocket and pulled out some heavy duty bubblegum and laid it on the road which trapped the 3 men as their feet were stuck to the gum and they had to stand there while people stared at them. They were truly unique and dressed funky. As I walked closer to them, they offered me cupcakes to help set them free but the girl said it was a trick. I just stood there as close to the edge of the as I could get and they started reaching out to me but I felt no remorse as I still had gum stuck in my hair. All of a sudden this anger came over me and I took of my belt and beat them till they started bleeding purple, and I swear to you that is exactly how it all went.

The Promiscious Textbook

My owner, Mike Hawk, was an untidy, disorganized, non-eccentric man who always left his bag unzipped. My previous owners would always keep me in their bags and only take me out when their professors needed me. But Mike, he was different. He would always leave his bag open so that I could breathe the fresh air and explore the world as he traveled even though the world’s information was written on my pages. He gave me a new outlook on life and made me feel like the only thing in his life. He would read me first thing in the morning, during the day in the library, and even late at night where we’d be all alone together. We spent countless of hours together and all we needed was each other. He would gain vast knowledge about the world from me and I would gain pleasure from his finger tips on the back of my spine which would make my pages curl. He would hold me nonchalantly but with enough firmness that it felt like he would never let me go.
Then one day, everything went wrong. I accidentally gave him a paper cut and he beat me like never before. This was much more worse than what we did during role play. His eyes were filled with fire as he threw me against the wall, I never felt so much pain in my life. I wished I was back in my previous owners dark and lonely bags, at least there I was safe. I thought this nightmare would never end as he kicked me around his room. He shrieked at me, "Advanced Functions 12 I CANT STAND YOU" and threw me off of his balcony. I was left there all alone, cold and abandoned but after everything I had done with him I was ashamed of myself. If only I could go back and take back what I did but I realized that I was left to go nowhere but forward. Ill cherish the memories I had with Mike Hawk, of all the late nights, early mornings and sometimes in the car.

Five Books I Would Love To eat.

There are many books out there in the world that cover every topic. You must chose wisely on what you would eat so that it can be used to your advantage. The very first book that I would love to eat is Harry Potter so that I can gain magicall skills and use them to make my life easier. I would boil the book in a nice big cauldron until it was nice and soft. The second book I would eat is Gordon Ramsay's World Kitchen so that I would never go hungry again. The best way to cook this book would be over a a hot flaming fire in a wok. The third book I would eat is the World Geography Book so that I will know all about the world without travelling anywhere. It would be best to cook this book over a firepit in the nice outdoors. The fourth book I would eat is the Dictionary so that I would be filled with vast amounts of knowledge and never feel stupid. This book would be best with some break and chicken noodle soup at the side. The final book I would eat is twilight to rid the world of some garbage. I would eat this book next to a toilet because I'll most likely puke it back out:D

This Asian Guy

I was born in Burlington, Ont. on Jan. 5, 1992. I am of Korean ethnicity but a Canadian citizen. I love relaxing and doing nothing at all but then again I also love being active and playing sports. Im currently the captain of the OP varsity boys Hockey team and will be playing rugby and badminton in the spring. I like to get involved in school clubs like S.S.H.O.P.S, JETS, and student council. I am the boys atheletic rep for OP and part of a hamilton policing program. I love to just relax by sitting infront of my computer and listening to music. I am looking forward to the challenges writers craft has to offer and hope that I have the energy to tackle them all with the best of my abilities.

Obesity at its Finest

What if you were too big to fit through a doorway? How would you feel if everywhere you went, you knew that people were staring at you and cracking jokes at your expense? Is it because of a disease or something you can control? Obesity has now become a medical condition in which excess body fat has gathered to the extent that it may reduce life expectancy. You are considered to be obese if you are so overweight that it endangers your health. Obesity is linked to many diseases like heart disease, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer and osteoarthritis. The question is, do these problems cause obesity? Or do they come from obesity?
The main treatment for obesity is dieting and physical exercise. Severe cases, surgery is done to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length. Obesity is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, and with the dramatic increase, it is viewed as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. Although being obese was viewed as wealthy and happy in history, it is now a symbol of laziness and disgust.
So what has caused North America to become the heaviest continent in the world? Well, 1 out of 3 Americans are considered obese. There are fast food joints everywhere. We have become a culture that sits behind a screen all day. The average American man has a waist the size of 40 inches which is an increase of 5 inches compared to 40 years ago. The average American women have a waist of 37 inches which is an increase of 7 inches compared to 40 years ago. It is estimated that over 67% of the US adult population are overweight or obese. So with stats and a lifestyle like this, it’s inevitable that we aren’t the heaviest continent in the world.

Just because obesity runs in families, this does not mean that it is genetic and it certainly does not mean that it is impossible to do something about it. Families eat together. They develop a common attitude towards food. The diet may be high in fat. Large, high calorie meals may be normal and everyone is expected to clear the plate. In some families the provision of sweets and cakes is an index of love. Being at risk of obesity does not make obesity inevitable. It means that the individual has to work harder to maintain an acceptable weight. Obesity is multi-factorial.
The sad thing is that 18% of children today are obese. This means that out of 1000 children, 180 of them are obese. That is a scary statistic to me. It is important to teach kids to eat healthy when they are young so they can carry those skills throughout their life. 70% of children who are obese will remain obese their entire life. Children become more at risk for disease’s and a very unhealthy lifestyle. Adult obesity has been linked to childhood obesity. It all comes back to the starting point.
Obesity is a rapid growing problem and but it doesn’t have to stay that way. No matter how much excess weight or fat you have, if you want to lose weight permanently, your diet program should be directed toward a slow, steady weight loss. According to official government dietary guidelines, unless your doctor feels your particular health condition would benefit from more rapid weight loss, you should expect to lose no more than 2 pounds of fat a week, although initial loss (mainly water) may be greater. Losing more weight is no guarantee that weight loss is likely to be permanent. Don´t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us together.

A Day Spent in the Media

“Hey guys, I want you to cheer as if you’re having the best time of your life whenever you see me clapping!”
“Just laugh as if I told the world’s funniest joke”

These were just some of the things that we had to fake to make a haircut seem as if Kanye West has just come to Toronto. It’s amazing how they have the power to make anything look interesting. They lied to us, they manipulated us, and my bum still hurts from sitting on those uncomfortable wooden boxes for two hours. Put on a fake smile, just do what they tell you to do and don’t ask questions. You can see that there really isn’t much to it to make a show look interesting. The set was small, cramped and very hot since there were so many bodies in that one tiny area. It’s disappointing when Leah came over and sat next to us and she wasn’t as great as we thought she would be. Not even half as great. She constantly swore around us, wrinkles on her face, and she wanted to get a razor for Keegans head but really needed it for her arms.

During the show, one of the people behind the cameras would come up to Leah during commercials and tell her to say that Keegan should be cutting it short since that’s how Canada voted but he chickened out. All he did was get a little trim and some emo bangs. It’s pretty sad how a haircut was the main highlight of their show. The only thing that kept me entertained was the faces my friends and I made at each other and at the show’s hosts. It was pretty cool how they only needed one camera to film the whole show and us learning how the camera works earlier in the day made it easier to understand.

The national film board has a pretty cool workshop where we got to make our very own stop motion animation. It was interesting to learn how a video is just thousands upon thousands of images in a row to get the feeling that it’s moving. They showed us many videos that were interesting and very open to interpretation. It is like how they say that a picture is worth a thousand words, stop motion animation is worth a billion words.

It is hard to believe how much work has to go into stop motion animation and just makes you appreciate the work even more. We made about a 10 second clip that took us about 20 minutes to film and about an hour to make the parts. Tim Burton spent 6 years making that movie and makes me wonder how he did not go insane. We had to find the image, exaggerate the image, and capture the image to be successful in stop motion animation. I think it would be an interesting career profession to pursue or even just as a hobby. It really makes a difference in your own knowledge when you take the time to appreciate the small things in life.

The Price to "Free" Speech

Entertainers should just entertain and give the people what they want. If they wish to express and stand up for their opinions then they should run for office and become a politician. Where does freedom of speech and equality come in then? Is “free speech” even the correct terminology? Is there a price to pay for “free speech”? Yes. Whatever you say or do will have positive or negative repercussions. Media loves to spin things more negatively/positively then the facts actually are which makes it more entertaining to watch.
Natalie Maines comment on how she was “ashamed that the president of the United States was from Texas” stirred more controversy because she said this while the president was very popular. Also, their home state (Texas) is a very conservative state that follows many old school traditions. Although the North American society claims that women are equal and treated the same as men, this does not shine through to its full potential. Women are still not treated equally and are still degraded in many ways.
How come when it comes to the issue of race, society frowns upon it and shoves it under the carpet? A statement about being ashamed about the president ruined the careers and reputation of three young women while a comment about the president not liking black people made society barely flinch. We live in a society where racism is not supposed to exist but unfortunately it does exist and it is not limited to one race. Racism is colour-blind and can apply to anybody. We are so afraid and sensitive to racism to the point where we are afraid to discuss it and act like it’s not there.

These were just some of the ways that the celebrities of our era decided to retaliate and protest. Musicians as early as the 50’s used their talent to protest against things they did not believe in but the 60’s was where the true passion of anti-war feelings came in.
This time era was during the Vietnam War which caused a lot of protest chants and songs to come out against the war. The main chant that was used a protest rallies was: “And its 1 2 3, what are we fighting for? Don’t ask me I don’t give a damn! Next stop is Viet Nam. And its 5 6 7 so open up them pearly gates. There aint no time to wonder why. Whoopee! We’re all gonna die.” Since the Vietnam War had soldiers who had enlisted and some that were drafted. This groups main protest chant was “Hell No! We won’t Go”. There were over 23 protest songs against the war during this era. Generations like these have changed and influence our society today to how it has become.

We still live in a society where men can say on live television, “The Chicks deserve to be slapped around” or “They are the Dixie twits. These are the dumbest. Dumbest bimbos with due respect, I have ever seen”. These statements are degrading towards women but were said on live news shows. With men like these in the media influencing the public, how can there ever be equality? Comments like these make it seem okay and natural in society. It makes women like Rihanna have to make tough decisions because of public influence even though her mind and heart may be telling her something else.
We discussed earlier in the year that celebrities have the responsibility to be positive role models and that they need to act certain ways in the eye of the public. Should women like Rihanna handle the Chris Brown situation how the public wants her too? Or should she be allowed to make her own decisions and still be a positive role model? We have seen the photos of the outcome of her beating but how can we be 100% sure they were not altered? There are many cases where the news media alters photos to create a more drastic and stronger feeling towards one side thus making the news biased.
People will believe almost anything they see out of that 52 inch screen. We looked at many pictures that have been manipulated. We watched many news stations that are actually entertaining stations. They take entertainment and turn it into fact less news just to fill in time and keep their viewers entertained. They are using charisma to attract viewers but losing their integrity to keep people.
Many journalists and news/media personalities have the power to persuade the audience and even manage to convince people of a total lie. The government used the media to help gain support for the War in Iraq. Fox news even managed to convince the whole country that Bush had won Florida State in the 2000 elections which is greatly believed to be the cause of Al Gore’s defeat. They have the power to make you believe that the Dixie Chicks are women who deserve to be slapped around and hate them to the point you want to kill them. So if journalists and news/media personalities have the power to do this, then shouldn’t that power be restricted? Also, should monopolies of news stations be allowed? Conservative men like Rupert Murdoch control over 9 broadcasting channels, 3 production/distribution film companies, 2 major internet companies, 8 sports related ownerships, 6 publishing companies, 3 magazine companies and 8 newspaper companies. This type of monopoly leaves room for only one viewpoint to be shown and always shows a biased viewpoint of the news.
In conclusion, The Dixie Chicks received harsh critism because they made their statement at the wrong time. Personalities of the news/entertainment should not be given so much power and should not have such biased viewpoints. Kanye West’s statement touched on a sensitive topic which no one was ready to discuss or listen too. There are many artists from every era that have protest songs and are usually about war. Freedom of speech does not exist because there will always be certain limits and you cannot say everything you truly wish too. There will always be repercussions and you must be able to deal with the consequences.

Diversity is important because it’s something that affects everyone. It’s more than just gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or racial classification. It involves every single aspect of each individual, culture, and background. So as the years go by and our society becomes more diverse, how come our entertainment doesn’t? It seems like we are backtracking and changing what reality really is to what producers want it to be. It’s disappointing to see that TV is still lacking diversity but good that progress is being made. In our recent class study we found that some races are being greatly over represented or greatly under represented. Referring to the “TV’s Great Black Hope” article, we found:

As you can see there are still some big differences for racial representation on TV. “White” is being greatly over represented while Latinos/Hispanic is being greatly under represented. What we are seeing on TV does not match the reality we live in. There are improvements being made with 3/5 races being within a 1% difference gap of zero but how long will it take till all 5 races reach that gap? There is still a lack of diversity and the statistics of the shows do not match what society really looks like. Even in our own personal findings for anime sitcom we found that racial representation was unequal. Compared to the 2007 US census we found that every group was under represented except for Caucasian.

We watched many popular anime sitcoms like Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park, American Dad, and King of the Hill and each one was still pretty “White”. We first need to get equal representation on TV so we can get rid of the “if” factor. Which means is each racial group even represented in the first place? Once we establish that then we can move onto the “how” factor. How is each culture, individual, race, gender, or age being represented? Are they being shown negatively or positively?
Also in our own study, we found that certain racial groups were represented more negatively then others. We found that certain races would always play certain roles on TV. Latinos and Blacks would usually play a criminal part while a Caucasian would play everything else. There are many other stereotypes in TV, even involving gender. Many women on TV would be seen be seen as the traditional homemaker while the man would support the family with income. This is what our ground found for racial roles:

In the media we have been influenced to think that all Arabs are terrorists who want to spread fear and see America burn. What about Aboriginal People who are always portrayed as criminals, violent, rapists, deceptive, lower intellect, or as passive and full of childlike obedience? It doesn’t help that Hollywood is always backing up Washington’s policies. The media only portrays half the side of the story and are very careful to choose the words they use like “evil”, “dangerous”, “savage”, etc which always gives a negative connotation. There is still too many stereotypes and discrimination on TV. Many ethnic groups are still not fairly represented and even misrepresented. Obviously when someone else is painting the picture about you in a negative way you are going to feel bitter and angry. You feel cheated and wonder how can you fix this? Is this how others view me as?
North America is mostly influenced by the media and believes that what they see on TV is real life. We get confused between reality and reelity. It’s time to start creating equality on TV so that all races can relate to the TV shows.
According to Fall Colors, they found that prime time diversity increases as evening progresses, with the 8:00 hour being the least racially diverse, and the 10:00 hour being the most racially diverse. This shows that they put the more racially diverse shows late at night because no one is watching. Some things that producers can do are to just simply make TV shows more diverse. Give a different racial person a primary role instead of secondary characters. Don’t go with the stereotypes that are already out there. Just simply put reality into TV shows. It matters because “more than 10 million children, on average, watch television from 8-9 o’clock in the evening? The “family hour,” as it has been called, is the most popular time for children to watch television, yet it remains the least diverse.” All of these children are growing up watching TV with no racial role model. That is why TV diversity matters.
We should not undermine our worth by comparing ourselves with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. This is what we need to show on TV.

Oh Me So Asian!

There are many symbols you can do that may seem funny but are very offensive to others. This issue has come up when the picture of Cyrus stretching the corner of her eyes leaked onto the internet. She says it’s just a goofy picture but doesn’t realize the deeper cruel meaning behind it. It the symbol that was used as a racist gesture to insult my ancestors. Even my parents personally had this happened to them when they first came to Canada and when I really look back in life I remember that’s how I used to be bullied but it never really affected me that much. But what about young little girls who are impressionable and become victims of racial bullying? What will her little Asian girl fans think when they see that picture? Is it okay for people to do that? Is that how my eyes actually look? They will think negatively about themselves and start questioning their own race. The reason why it is a big deal is because she is a great influence on girls everywhere. She is their role model and what she does has a big factor on them. What if little white girls start doing that in front of little Asian girls at school? There can be some racial issues that will arise in society. It’s degrading and putting humanity back 50 years. China has taken a severe stand and banned Cyrus from entering the country, any broadcast of her TV show, films, and sales of merchandise. It’s a big step but it made me realize how many people out there find this offensive.

I know that racism is the key issue here but what about underage drinking? Do parents want their children to be influenced by that? It doesn’t take a genius to see that Cyrus could have been possibly intoxicated under the influence. You can see in the picture that one of the males is holding a glass of wine. It raises another issue and I wonder why no one has brought it up yet? She is promoting underage drinking and racism at the same time. How do parents feel when their little girl has seen the picture? Would they want someone like that as a role model for their children? I know that the picture is one of her private ones but as a celebrity she still has to act like a good role model, especially when the majority of her fans are little girls. All they are asking for is a legit apology and for her to learn her lesson. Say no to racism.

Beware of Recession

For those who don't know already, our beloved countries economy is rapidly deteriorating. We are currently stuck in a recession. You may find yourself eating out less and/or shopping less these days. With the prices fluctuating so much, it’s making everyone tighten up their belts. But what does our country going into a recession mean for us?
There are a lot of great things that are getting cheaper that teens love which are clothes and electronics for fashion. Cars are getting a lot cheaper which is perfect for our age group as we are starting to get our drivers licenses. We can go anywhere we want this summer since airfares are cheaper. There is always alternative energy that is getting cheaper to charge our electronics. Toys are drastically getting cheaper so it can entertain the kid in all of us. With all of these things getting cheaper, who wouldn’t want to be in a constant recession? Well, with the recession comes with the rise of food prices so if you have a goal to lose weight then now may be the perfect time. Also, with the recession here, we have to learn to take care of ourselves much better because even the price of medical care and prescription drugs are going up. As we are near graduating and deciding where we want to go for post-secondary education, a big factor that might affect our decisions is the tuition costs as they are drastically going up. As many of us are getting our drivers licenses and our own cars, we may need to think about what car we want to buy according to its gas tank. You may think the prices are expensive now but just wait a bit longer till prices sky rocket. The streets may start to fill up with garbage as the cost of getting your garbage collected has increased by 43% in the past decade, 24% in the past five years and that’s including the entire recycling program and other efforts at waste reduction. Also, as we are just two years shy of the drinking age, the prices have gone up 30% in the past decade so it’s going to cost our generation a lot more to have a drunken time. Being stuck in a recession makes a lot of families struggle and faces many hardships.
It also doesn’t help with the rise in the unemployment rate as Canada is now at 6.3% but will rise to 7.5% by 2010. Many economists like Doug Porter from BMO capital markets predict that Canada is headed into a worse recession than anyone expected, one that could last until 2010. Is it possible to say that we could be close to another Great Depression? Will it be another time of mass unemployment, starvation, and homelessness? It seems that it will be most unlikely that we will go that far. The major reason for the Great Depression in 1929 was because of there were excessive lending, and not enough money to back it up. Banks went into a cash crisis because they lent money to people who had a high risk of not paying it back. Now dazes a couple of banks have followed the same route but not enough to cause a stock market crash. Another thing was the constant reparations from Germany which caused a gradual loss of trading with Europe in general. There is nothing equivalent today. It can be a scary time but with the right planning and tactics we can come out of this on top.

Not Just Another Band-aid Solution

Imagine you’re watching your favourite TV show and then the commercials come on. You see that same old white male who has a child sitting in his lap. He starts telling you about that little child and how he is constantly hungry, how his father was killed, how he is constantly living in fear, and how it seems completely hopeless but you can make a difference. Does this look familiar?

I’m not trying to bash on these Christian organizations, I admire them for their efforts and hope one day I am able to make a difference as well but what exactly is that difference they are making? Is it a permanent difference or just like we said in class a “band-aid solution”?

World Vision is an organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. This organization tries to give these poor countries access to clean water, food, medical assistance, clothing, and shelter. All the money you give to these organizations is used to make improvements that will help the entire community. It may be a “band-aid” but it is still making life easier and bearable for these people who live in poverty.


We may not be making a great impact on the country overall but we are making a great impact on each village one by one. We give them access to clean water, food, and an education so that they will eventually be able to survive on their own. We are implementing these small steps that will eventually make a big difference. They are thinking globally and acting locally to help make a change. It’s sad how more than half the world’s population survives on less than $2 a day. The society we live in has become a consumerism lifestyle that makes us believe that money is everything when really it isn’t and it takes the poorest of the poor to teach us that.
We discussed in class why Africa is poor and how it mostly comes down to the horrible and corrupt governments. So what makes the government so corrupt? Are they corrupt because they are desperately poor so they result to negative ways of earning money? Or are they simply corrupt because they are keeping their people in poverty? According to a 2002 study conducted by the African Union, corruption consumes more than a quarter of the continent's gross domestic product every year, about $148 billion. It is sad because there seems to be no solution that the world leaders can come up with to help Africa’s corruption, wars, everyday violence, and droughts. Also, the core of Africa’s failure is their leaders to provide an effective government but, it seems we can’t do anything about that. Maybe that’s why the only peaceful option we have to help them is through organizations that we see on TV who goes over to support the poor.

Another plan that could be possible is to start creating jobs in developing countries because without jobs then there will be no end to the poverty. To make this work, it would take the international community to all get involved and start investing in Africa. They need to fix its corrupt leaders so that no more money is wasted so that way Africa will finally be able to survive on its own. It would take a lot of money but with specific targets and effort, progress could be made. It’s time for a positive change that will make a big difference in the future. Just like the old saying goes “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime”.
